    Autograph Manuscript by a Teenage Ernest Hemingway

    Ernest Hemingway. Manuscript Pages for "a story about poker." [N.p., presumably Oak Park, n.d., ca. 1913-1914].

    One and approximately one-fourth pages on two sheets of ruled paper (approximately 8 x 5 inches). Written on rectos only in pencil. Unsigned. The text on the first page breaks off suddenly, and the text on the second page seems to be a fragment. The entire item seems to be a fragment from an early story. Minor thumbsoiling and some creasing to both leaves. Still, a very good and unusual Hemingway item.

    "This is a story about a poker game. Stories about poker games are usually read by ladies while the men turn to the beauty hints section. Did you ever sit behind a lady in a train and watch her reading a poker story? Did you ever see the look of unholy joy that comes into her face when the hero shows a full house and rakes in a pile of Blue chips? In the magazines the hero is always either raking in [end of first page], [second page] so I had better start injecting a little story."
