    Description

Ernest Hemingway. L'Adieu aux armes. [A Farewell to Arms]. [Paris]: N[ouvelle] R[evue] F[rançaise, 1931]. First French edition, trade issue, limited to 1000 copies on Alfa (with 180 hors commerce copies), of which this is number 419; association copy, inscribed by the author to Robert Desnos, a prominent French surrealist, on the preliminary blank leaf: "To Robert Desnos / Who is a great / Poet / from his friend / Ernest Hemingway." Octavo (7.625 x 4.5 inches; 180 x 115 mm.). 384, [1, printer's note], [1, blank] pages (note: pages 1 and 2 are blank). Slightly later reddish brown half-morocco over marbled paper-covered boards; spine in six compartments with five raised bands, lettered in gilt and ruled in black; top edge sprinkled black, others rough-trimmed; marbled endpapers; three binder's blanks at the front and the rear; original wrappers (including backstrip) bound in. Boards very slightly splayed; front joint lightly worn; backstrip with three tiny scuffs to the uppermost raised band and some trivial rubbing; marbled paper worn at the edges, including a small tear to the upper edge of the front board with some minor paper loss. Leaf with pages 39-40 with some spotty discoloration to the upper and fore-edge margins, affecting a few lines of text. Near fine. Robert Desnos, who would later join the Resistance during World War II and die in a concentration camp, bonded with Hemingway over a shared affinity for the Spanish Republicans battling Franco in the Spanish Civil War (Conley. Robert Desnos. Lincoln: 2003. p. 87).

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
