Ernest Hemingway. In Our Time. New York: Boni & Liveright, 1925. First expanded edition of Hemingway's first regularly published book. Mounted onto the front free endpaper is an original photograph of Hemingway's first wife, Elizabeth Hadley Richardson, cradling their infant son Jack (nicknamed "Bumby") on her lap. Photograph is approximately 5.5 x 3.5 inches. Donald Ogden Stewart's copy with his initials ("D.O.S." in red pencil) above the mounted photo. Stewart, a very successful screenwriter, was a friend of Ernest Hemingway's, and was the basis of the character of Bill Gorton in The Sun Also Rises. Octavo. [2, blank], [215], [7, blank] pages. Publisher's full black cloth, front board stamped in gilt in a geometric design and lettered in gilt, spine lettered in gilt. Spine heavily sunned, gilt-stamped letters are nearly invisible, spine edges worn, dome rubbing and mild edgewear to boards, corners slightly bumped and worn. Some occasional foxing and thumbsoiling in text, a few gutters overopened. Bookseller's ticket on rear pastedown, with some offsetting on the rear free endpaper. The photograph is a bit toned, with some creasing. A very good copy with an excellent association. Hanneman A3.
