Inscribed by Ernest Hemingway to His Friend Clara Spiegel, with a Note in Hemingway's Hand

Ernest Hemingway. Green Hills of Africa. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1953.

Uniform edition. Presentation copy, inscribed by Hemingway on the front free endpaper: "To Clara [Spiegel] who has / seen and been to Africa / this attempt to do the same / with love /Papa [underlined]." In addition, this copy has a small note, written in pencil by Hemingway on two sides (6.5 x 4.25 inches); on recto: "To Do For Paris Book / -Write Bicycle Racing.- [written in script]" and on the verso (in cursive): "as her hatred for me / began after she had / learned to write dialogue / from a book I had / written which had / been successful." The "Paris Book" he refers to is A Moveable Feast, which he was working on in Sun Valley in 1958; the other note ("as her hatred...") refers to his relationship with Gertrude Stein which takes up two chapters in A Moveable Feast. Octavo. [viii], [295], [1, blank] pages.

Publisher's full green cloth, front cover stamped in blind and lettered in gilt, original dust jacket. Jacket rear panel is torn in the upper left corner missing about a third of the jacket, a tear along the length of the rear panel, jacket spine browned, mild wear to edges. Overall, a very good copy, with an excellent inscription and note.

Clara Spiegel (1904-1997) was the wife of mail-order magnate Frederick Spiegel, who, when in the Sun Valley ski resort, would visit with her friend Ernest Hemingway, who worked and vacationed there. Spiegel was a novelist (she wrote under the pseudonym Clare Jaynes), short story writer, big game hunter, trout fisher, and world traveler. It was no wonder that she and Hemingway became friends.
