Ernest Hemingway. Green Hills of Africa. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1953. Uniform edition. Presentation copy, signed and inscribed by the author to his goddaughter and her husband, "To Alden and Robert Reid [sic] / with best wishes for / all good things. / Ernest Hemingway." Octavo. 294, [1] pages. Publisher's green cloth stamped in blind, spine stamped in gilt; original illustrated dust jacket. Corners just bumped, minor edgewear, spine and edges lightly sunned. Cream endpapers; some offsetting. Internally generally clean and tight, all edges trimmed; text block edges lightly toned. Dust jacket unclipped ($3.50); 25 x 35 mm open tear to the back panel, spine sunned, chipping to head of spine, minor soiling. Housed in clamshell case, half green morocco over green cloth, spine stamped in gilt with five raised bands. Very good book with very good dust jacket.

Alden [née Calmer] was the daughter of Ned Calmer, a writer for the Paris Herald Tribune in the early 1930s, during which he befriended Hemingway. A few years after Alden was born, Hemingway helped arrange her baptism in Paris and was present as her godfather. Unfortunately, he was not able to attend her wedding in 1951 and instead sent a set of signed books as a wedding gift, at the suggestion of her father, of which this is one.
