First Edition, Signed by Ernest Hemingway

Ernest Hemingway. A Farewell to Arms. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1929.

First edition, first printing. Signed by Hemingway in blue ballpoint on the front free endpaper. Beneath his signature are two manuscript lines heavily crossed out in blue pen; it is unknown who wrote these lines or who crossed them out. Octavo. [x], 355, [3, blank] pages.

Publisher's full black cloth, with gold printed paper labels on front cover and spine, first issue dust jacket ("Katharine" instead of "Catharine" on the front flap). Some light rubbing to jacket, two neat, faint blue lines of offset running the length of the verso of jacket, some light rubbing to paper labels on cloth. A fine copy of this classic.

    Hanneman A8a.
