Ernest Hemingway. A Farewell to Arms. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1929. First edition, limited issue, limited to 510 copies, of which this is number sixty-five, and signed by the author. Octavo (9.0625 x 6.125 inches; 230 x 155 mm.). [2, limitation leaf], [viii], 355, [1, blank] pages; text partially unopened. Publisher's half-vellum over light greenish-blue paper-covered boards, black leather spine label lettered and ruled in gilt; page edges untrimmed, light greenish-blue endpapers; in original patterned paper slipcase with printed red paper label pasted to the front face, hand-numbered. Backstrip only just soiled with a tiny ink blot near the bottom edge; very minor creasing to spine ends; board edges very faintly discolored; rear board very gently bowed. Some shallow rippling to the upper margin of leaf with pages 200 and 201. Slipcase top face detached but present; edges along bottom face just starting to split; small bruise to front face; fore edges and bottom face worn; with substantial fragments of the original glassine. A beautiful, near fine copy. Published simultaneously with the trade issue; the only signed-limited edition of Hemingway's major works. Hanneman A8b.
