    Description

Inscribed by Erle Stanley Gardner to a Fan

Erle Stanley Gardner. The D. A. Calls It Murder. New York: William Morrow, 1937.

First edition, first printing. Inscribed by Gardner on front free endpaper: "To / George W. Nilssen / with kindest / regards from / yours / Erle Stanley Gardner / Nov. 1950." Additionally, folded and tipped to the half-title page is a warmly written typed letter from Gardner to Nilssen, signed by Gardner and on his letterhead. Octavo. 295 pages.

Publisher's black cloth with red titles. Top edge stained red. Modest rubbing to edges of cloth. Pages mildly toned with offsetting to endpapers. Neat owner notation on rear pastedown. Minor soiling to bottom edge of endpapers. Dust jacket shows light edge wear with minor chipping and a few small tears to top edge. Spine is faded, as Gardner mentions in his letter. A very good copy.

This copy was generously supplied to Nilssen by Gardner himself, who felt that signing the paperback that Nilssen sent was not adequate after learning what a fan he was.
