Inscribed by Gardner on front free endpaper: "To Jean-who writes / 'em for me. / With love / Erle / December 1936 /[at the bottom] Erle Stanley Gardner." Laid-in is a card from the Erle Stanley Gardner Museum in Ventura, California. Octavo. 295 pages. Publisher's black cloth with red titles, dust jacket. Jacket spine sunned, some rubbing, minor thumbsoiling, and mild wear to jacket, binding a bit rubbed, some soiling to front board. Still, a near fine copy with an excellent association. Agnes Jean Bethell was Gardner's faithful secretary and assistant for nearly fifty years, and became his second wife for the final two years of his life.
