Eric Carle. The Very Hungry Caterpillar. New York: The World Publishing Company, [1969]. First edition. Oblong quarto (11.5 x 8.25 inches; 290 x 210 mm.). [24] pages. Several pages with die-cut holes from where the very hungry caterpillar ate various foods. Publisher's glossy pictorial boards, price-clipped dust jacket. A few short tears at jacket near upper spine, some edgewear, mild soiling to jacket, one tape repair to jacket verso, some rubbing, light toning to binding, front hinge and a few gutters just starting. Very good. A rare book, seldom seen in the original dust jacket. Printed in Japan, because no American printer could produce the different-sized leaves with the die-cut holes as economically.

This book has won several awards, including the American Institute of Graphic Arts Award in 1970, the Selection du Grand Prix des Treize in France in 1972, and the Nakamori Reader's Prize in Japan in 1975. In 2012, it was voted the second most popular children's picture book ever in a survey of School Library Journal readers (the first was Where the Wild Thing Are (1963), a first of which is significantly easier to find in the original dust jacket). The rarity of the first edition of The Very Hungry Caterpillar cannot be overstated. While it is true that there have been over 30 million copies of this title printed, very few of the first editions have survived, especially with the extremely rare dust jacket.
