Octavo (7.375 x 5.125 inches; 189 x 128 mm.). [14], 281, [1] pages. Publisher's light gray cloth, front board and spine decoratively stamped, spine lettered and rear board stamped with publisher's device in dark red; top edge of the text block stained dark red, others untrimmed; in the original dust jacket. Barely perceptible shelf wear at extremities of binding; spine ends a bit softened. Very mild toning to endpapers. Dust jacket faintly yellowed with a bit of wear at edges, joint and flap folds; minor rubbing to exposed panels; three very short tears near spine panel. Very faint tidemark at verso of front flap fold. Near fine with a clean, bright interior. First stateside appearance of The Mask of Dimitrios, Ambler's best-known work and a forerunner of the thriller genre. Basis for the 1944 Jean Negulesco film starring Peter Lorre, Sydney Greenstreet and Zachary Scott. Dark Page 4 (the first edition); a Haycraft Queen Cornerstone (under the original title).
