Description

Emmett Dalton: A Rare Inscribed and Signed Presentation Copy of the Former Outlaw's Book. Emmett was one of four brothers whose outlaw gang terrorized Oklahoma Territory in the early 1890s. By 1892 they felt the law-notably Deputy U.S. Marshal Heck Thomas-was closing in on them. They decided to go for one more big score before "retiring." Their target: two banks on opposite sides of the street in Coffeyville, Kansas. On October 5th, 1892, the gang rode into town, wearing fake beards. But they were recognized, and while inside the bank the town's citizenry gathered for a shootout. Gat and Bob Dalton were killed, and Emmett received 23 bullet wounds, but survived to do a 14 year prison stretch before being pardoned. The sole escaping brother, Bill Dalton, then joined up with the notorious Doolin Gang, continuing his criminal career until killed by a posse in June 1894.

Emmett led an exemplary life after his release, and in 1931 published this surprisingly candid history of the Dalton gang, When the Dalton's Rode. After leaving prison Dalton moved to Southern California, where he was a sometime real estate agent and actor. The volume offered here was presented to Tom Murray, a silent film actor who sometimes appeared in Western movies, when the two undoubtedly became friends. It is in excellent condition, with a large, bold black ink inscription that fill most of the flyleaf. Housed in an expensive custom slipcase.
