S. edition, printed from the textual plates of The Lutetian Society of London for The Masterpieces of E´mile Zola, limited to 1,000 numbered sets, of which this is number seventeen, printed on Japon. Complete in twelve octavo volumes. Each title illustrated with frontispiece and eleven additional etched plates after paintings by various artists, several frontispieces in two states, one signed by the etcher, small simple drawing in unknown hand in lower margin of numerous plates. Contemporary dark brownish-red morocco, paneled in gilt, spine compartments ruled in gilt with lettered or stamped with fleur-de-lys device in gilt, five raised bands; top edge gilt, others untrimmed; elaborate gilt turn-ins. Joints and spine ends worn, crowns of some volumes chipped. Still, a very good set. Six highlights from Zola's movement-defining Naturalist epic that would span twenty books, including La Curée, L'Assommoir, Nana, Pot-Bouille, Germinal and La Terre.
