    Description

Émile Bernard. Sonnet Gauguin. Autograph Poem Signed. "EB." One page in French, 4.5" x 7", n.p.; 1890.
Poem entitled "Sonnet Gauguin," with subtitle "Bois sculpté," ["Carved wood"], comprised of three stanzas. Bernard's sonnet is metaphorical; he writes of a heavy rock mask in a fantastical wood, a "she" who hears "the word that twists" and death whose painful promises make more bearable the exile of desire, which yet yearns for illicit pleasure. It is unclear what connection, if any, the sonnet has to Paul Gauguin.

Émile Henri Bernard (1868-1941) was a French Post-Impressionist painter, writer, and poet who had artistic friendships with Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890), Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) and Eugène Boch (1855-1941) and, later, with Paul Cézanne (1839-1906). Most of his notable work was accomplished at a young age, in the years 1886 through 1897, a period when this poem was composed.

Condition: Sonnet has slight stains, top left hand corner is creased, with slight ink impression on bottom, possibly the result of letter being folded; otherwise good.
