    Description

Émile Bernard. Autograph Letter Signed. "Bernard." Four page bifolium in French, with canceled postal cover, 8.25" x 13.25", [Paris: March 1895]. Addressed "Mon cher Schuff" to his friend and fellow artist Emile Schuffenecker. Bernard has learned that "Schuff" is with his brother [Schuff's own brother]. He warns Schuff against his brother because the latter is not a Christian. Only those who believe in Jesus Christ are apt to offer "us" counsel. Begs Schuff to leave "G" and return to his wife. She is his after all and forgiveness is her due. Bernard tells Schuff to cease their correspondence if his intention is to leave his wife since that is not Christian and Bernard cannot be mixed with anything that is not Christian. He encourages him to leave what is evil and return to what is good, his family, his wife, and forgiveness. He, Bernard, does not care about anything else and does not want to be involved in any way with Schuff if he does not take this "Christian" course of action. Separation and divorce are antithetical to being a good Christian.
Émile Henri Bernard (1868-1941) was a French Post-Impressionist painter, writer, and poet who had artistic friendships with Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890), Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) and Eugène Boch (1855-1941) and, later, with Paul Cézanne (1839-1906). Beginning in 1893, he started traveled to Egypt, Spain and Italy and returned to Paris in 1904, where he remained for the rest of his life.
Émile Schuffenecker (1851-1934) was a French Post-Impressionist artist, painter, art teacher, and art collector. A friend of Paul Gauguin, whom he first met in 1872, and one of the first collectors of works by Vincent van Gogh. Since the 1920s, Schuffenecker has been suspected by some as forging works by contemporaries, such as Van Gogh. The charge has not been definitively settled.
Condition: Letter has usual folds, is toned and brittle, with several tears to folds; overall fair. Postal cover is worn and torn.
