Ellery Queen. Ellery Queen's Challenge to the Reader. New York: 1938. De luxe gift edition, limited to fifty copies and signed.

    More Information:

Ellery Queen. Ellery Queen's Challenge to the Reader. New York: Frederick A. Stokes, 1938. One of fifty de luxe gift editions, signed by "Ellery Queen" (most likely Frederic Dannay). This copy presented to British mystery writer H. C. Bailey (author of the "Reggie Fortune" novels and stories). Octavo. [viii], [503], [1, blank] pages. Signed limitation leaf inserted at front. Publisher's de luxe binding of half orange pebbled morocco over umber cloth, spine lettered in gilt; five raised bands. Top edge stained red. Spine a bit dull; some wear and soiling to binding; joints just starting at edges, rear hinge just starting; text a bit toned at edges; mild thumbsoiling to edge of text block. Text a bit skewed. With the bookplate of collector and bibliographer Adrian Homer Goldstone on the front pastedown. Overall, a very good copy of this rare item with an excellent association and provenance. Ellery Queen was a creation of authors Frederic Dannay and Manfred Lee. From the James C. Seacrest Collection.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
