Elizabeth Taylor and Betty Ford Signed AA Big Book. In 1982 Betty Ford, a recovering alcoholic and prescription drug abuser, founded the Betty Ford Center for Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation in Rancho Mirage, California. Her status as former first lady and the public announcement of her struggles drew a number of high profile clients to her clinic, including Elizabeth Taylor. The first item offered in this lot is a hardback copy of the Third Edition of Alcoholics Anonymous (New York: A.A. World Services, Inc, 1976, fourteenth printing) best known as the "Big Book," the basic text for A.A. It belonged to a woman named "Swanee" who was recovering at the center between November 1983 and November 1984. Filling the first and last several pages are messages and notes of encouragement from a number of the other patients there at the time. One of these patients happened to be Elizabeth Taylor who has written a heartfelt and personal note to Swanee on one of the limitation pages, in full: "My dear young Swanee. How I do love you! You brought a song to all of us. Thank you for your generous, loving, tender spirit. I know you will find everything out of life that you desire and with a true sence [sic] of peace & love. All my love, Elizabeth" There is a small color photo of Taylor attached near this inscription. Betty Ford has also signed on the front free endpaper, in full: "To Swanee- May you find the kind of life you want in serenity- one day at a time- God Bless- Betty Ford"

Also included in this lot are two additional items. The first is a copy of Betty Ford's book Betty: A Glad Awakening (New York: Doubleday, 1987) signed on a bookplate laid down to the first free endpaper. The last is a beautiful 8" x 10" B&W portrait photo signed by Elizabeth Taylor. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
