A Handsome Set

Edwin James. Account of the Expedition from Pittsburgh to the Rocky Mountains. Performed in the Years 1819, 1820. London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1823. First English edition. Three octavo volumes. vii, 344; vii, 356; vii, 347 pages. Folding map, fold-out Indian battle map in color, fold-out geographical chart. Two frontispieces, one in color, five black and white aquatint plates. Half-titles present in volumes II and III. Complete. Contemporary tree calf, spine ruled and numbered in gilt, brown gilt morocco lettering labels. Some rubbing to bindings, especially at joints, some corners slightly bumped, some hinges just starting, text a bit wrinkled and moderately creased, some occasional soiling in text and plates, a few plates trimmed a bit close, some contemporary ink ownership markings on front pastedowns and title-pages. The fold-out map has some repairs and reinforcements to the verso. Still, a near fine copy of this handsome edition. Chemised in quarter blue morocco slipcase.

"Notable government expedition (commanded by Maj. Stephen H. Long), supplementing earlier discoveries of Pike and of Lewis and Clark, and pronouncing the plains region as nothing but a desert, incapable of cultivation!" (Howes J41). The expedition across the Great Plains from the Missouri River to the Rocky Mountains was the first expedition to include artists who provided an important visual record. The expedition resulted in the first detailed mapping of the area which Long famously described as "The Great American Desert." Sabin 35683. Streeter 1784.
