A Beautiful Hand-Colored Map of the World and One of the Last Maps to Show California as an Island

Edward Wells (1667-1727), cartographer and mathematician. A New Map of the Terraqueous Globe according to the Ancient Discoveries and most general Divisions of it into Continents and Oceans. [Oxford, ca. 1710]. Hand-colored map. Originally engraved by M. Burghers. Approximately 15.5 x 21 inches. Minor toning and foxing, central vertical crease (most likely reinforced on verso). Colors quite bright. Very good. Matted, framed and glazed. This map comes from one of two works by Wells, A new Sett of Maps both of Antient and Present Geography..., or, A Treatise of Antient and Present Geography. It is unclear whether this map is from the first editions of those works (issued in 1700-1701), or from one of the later editions issued for some years later. Although this map holds few details (showing general outlines of the land masses), it is charming and beautifully engraved.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
