Edward Sherburne. The Sphere of Marcus Manilius Made an English Poem: With Annotations and an Astronomical Appendix. London: Printed for Nathaniel Brooke, 1675. First edition of this translation of the finest 17th-century English astronomical work. Folio. [18], 68; [2, Section title of Appendix], 221, [9, Table of Names and Index] pages. With a copper-engraved allegorical frontispiece by Wenceslaus Hollar and nine (of eleven, missing one of the celestial maps and one lunar plate) copper-engraved plates (four double-page), and seven copper engravings of solar systems in the text. Engraved headpieces and initials. Contemporary full mottled calf, rebacked, with leather spine title label lettered in gilt. Moderate wear and abrading to the binding. Bumped corners. Small library bookplate to the front pastedown. Short horizontal tear in the front free endpaper. Bottom corner of E2 torn away (not affecting text). Marginal dampstain to top corner from page 195 onward (not affecting text). Mostly minor scattered foxing, with a few tiny tobacco burns. A significant work, printed on sturdy paper, typographically-pleasing, and with beautiful engraved plates. A very good copy.
