    Edward Gibbon. The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. London: Printed for W. Strahan; and T. Cadell, 1776-1788. Mixed edition, with second edition of Volume I, and first editions of Volumes II-VI. Six quarto volumes. Volumes IV-VI lack half-title pages. Three folding maps, one frontis portrait. Modern quarter pebbled morocco over cloth, spine lettered and stamped in gilt. Boards and board edges somewhat rubbed, cloth at corners starting to fray a bit, a few instances of faint soiling. Text blocks slightly toned, light to moderate dampstaining on edges, light to mild scattered foxing with heavier foxing on preliminary and terminal leaves, occasional dust soiling in outer margins of text, some gutter hinges over-opened affecting some sheets. Volume I affected by large stains on pages xiv-xv and page xviii-xix of the notes portion, covering text; minor worming on tail of text block. Volume II title page starting at head. Volume II has preliminary sheets starting at head; one cello-tape repair on verso of rear blank flyleaf. Still, near fine.
