    More Information:

Edward E. ("Doc") Smith and Mrs. Lee Hawkins Garby. The Skylark of Space. [Providence: Buffalo Book Co., 1946]. First edition of the author's first book, one of 500 copies. Presentation copy, inscribed to Forrest J. Ackerman.

Beneath this inscription, the book is signed by Smith's wife, the book's dedicatee. Additionally, the book is inscribed on the frontispiece to Ackerman by the artist, Charles Schneeman. Octavo. 303, [1, blank] pages. Publisher's full red cloth, front cover and spine stamped in gilt, dust jacket. Jacket spine worn and a bit sunned, some rubbing and mild wear to jacket edges, some rubbing to binding. Overall, very good. This book (originally written by him and Mrs. Garby in 1915-1916, and published in Amazing Stories magazine in 1928) is the first science fiction novel by the author of the Lensman series (considered by many to be the second-best science fiction series, after Asimov's Foundation series). The inscription to Ackerman is wonderful, saying that he has been to science fiction "what eggs are to ham, what ruin is to rack, what poise is to grace". Skylark of Space is considered to be the first and perhaps best example of the "Space Opera". A rare item with an excellent association.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
