Superb Archive of Correspondence From Various California Writers

Edward Dubois Flint. The Author's Archive of Letters, Articles, and Related Material Concerning His Book The Garden Patch, 1913. 9.25 x 10.5 inches. Fifty-eight album pages contained in a tooled leather Arts and Crafts-style binder designed by Ethel Shearer of San Francisco. Fine condition.

A fabulous archive which includes pages of professional newspaper reviews of Flint's The Garden Patch as well as many more personal reviews sent to the author's Los Gatos, California home from intimates such as Jack London, Luther Burbank, and Edwin Markham. The album contains too many wonderful examples to make mention of them all, but of particular note is a one-page typed letter signed by Jack London dated August 3, 1914, a one-page typed letter signed by Luther Burbank dated January 18, 1913, Flint's original registry of copyright for the book with the Library of Congress; an original poem titled "The Praise of Poverty" written directly in the book by American poet Edwin Markham; and many short pieces and poems written by the author. Included are letters of congratulation from President Wilson on White House letterhead (signed by his secretary) and from Henry Ford on his personal letterhead and signed by his secretary. Shearer's binder is a work of art featuring a hand-tooled vine framing the title, with a delightful vignette of hand-colored vegetables below. A wonderful archive and a personal California history in a wonderful hand-made binding.
