Edgar Rice Burroughs. The War Chief. Chicago: A. C. McClurg & Co., 1927. First edition. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author to his first wife, Emma, within two weeks of publication: "To / my dear wife, / who has read / forty nine of my / stories -- no, fifty-two -- / and still lives / Edgar Rice Burroughs / Tarzana Ranch / Sept 27 1927." More Information:

"... nine months after completing the story which became the Master Mind of Mars, Burroughs began work on this western tale, originally entitled 'The War Chief of the Apaches.' This story relected [Edgar Rice Burroughs's] deep and abiding respect for the Apaches gained during his expereinces when he was a young man with the 7th US Cavalry in the Arizona Territory in 1896-1897" (Zeuschner, Edgar Rice Burroughs: The Bibliography, 2016).
