Pasted to the front free endpaper is the printed label which designates that this book is "one of the few survivors of the near-disastrous fire that occurred in our storeroom on Saturday, May 3, 1958." There is only the slightest hint of damage to this volume - a shadow of smoke residue to the edge of the rear dust jacket flap. An otherwise fine copy. [and:] John Carter of Mars. New York: Canaveral Press, 1964. First edition. Octavo. 208 pages. Illustrated by Reed Crandall. Introduction by Richard A. Lupoff. Gray cloth over boards. Illustrated endpapers. Collects the two John Carter stories: "John Carter and the Giant of Mars" and "Skeleton Men of Jupiter." First state binding, which incorrectly states the title as John Carter and the Giant of Mars. Fine in dust jacket. Unless otherwise stated, all books in this lot are in very good condition, in dust jackets.

Edgar Rice Burroughs turned his hand to writing in his mid-thirties. His first published short story, "Under the Moons of Mars," was later published in book form as A Princess of Mars, which the September 8, 1917 Publishers' Weekly mentioned in passing: "Edgar Rice Burroughs, author of the Tarzan stories, has projected his fertile imagination to the planet Mars. There he gives his inventive fancy full play, peopling the red planet with a host of extraordinary creatures." Ten more novels followed over the decades, comprising a series which has had a profound influence on popular culture.
