Edgar Rice Burroughs Tarzan the Terrible. (Chicago: A.C. McClurg & Co., 1921), first edition, 408 pages, red cloth binding with black lettering on spine and cover, 12mo (5.25" x 7.5"), dust jacket (in protective mylar). Laid in photo of Burroughs on front endpaper. Generally considered to be one of the best in the series, Tarzan the Terrible finds Lord Greystoke journeying to Pal-ul-don, a land no man has ever penetrated, where triceratops still fly. Here, he fights Waz-don and Ho-don tribesmen, saber-tooth tigers, a beast-like man named Tor-o-don, lions, and other magnificent beasts in an effort to save his wife, Jane, from the evil clutches of Ko-tan and Lu-don, the high priest. Originally published as a seven-part serial in Argosy All-Story Weekly, this entry into the Tarzan mythos allegedly reflects Burroughs' negative attitudes towards Germany after the First World War. This copy is about very good, with a crease on the spine, which is slightly sunned, and general edge and corner wear. There is a previous owner's name and address written in pen on the front free endpaper. The dust jacket is not original. It is a color photocopy of the original dust jacket. Mainly, this copy would be a welcome addition to any Burroughs library.
