The Very Rare First Appearance of Tarzan of the Apes
    in the Original Wrappers

Edgar Rice Burroughs. Tarzan of the Apes. In The All-Story Magazine. New York: The Frank A. Munsey, Company, October, 1912. The first appearance in print of the first Tarzan novel, complete in this rare issue. Quarto. [8, ads], 241 [sic] - 480, [12, ads] pages. Tarzan of the Apes appears on pages 241-372. Text throughout in double-columns. Publisher's original printed color wrappers. Tape repairs to wrappers at spine (running the length of the spine) and front and rear joints, wrappers worn with some marginal chipping and some soiling and dampstaining, wrappers coming apart from text block, ads somewhat dampstained, text toned, with some minor occasional chipping or tears, several pages creased at upper corner. Still, a very good copy of a notoriously rare and fragile item.
This rare item is sold with the previous issue of The All-Story Magazine (September, 1912), which announces the forthcoming publication of Tarzan of the Apes in the following issue (page 237): "Tarzan of the Apes is the name of Mr. Burroughs's new novel. We are going to give it to you all at once. It's a crackerjack. If you will stop and realize how many thousands and thousands of stories an editor has to read, day in, day out, you will be impressed when we tell you that we read this yarn at one sitting and had the time of our young lives..." Also on the same page on the previous paragraph, the editors reveal that the author of Under the Moons Of Mars (the magazine publication title of A Princess of Mars) was in fact, Burroughs, and not the pseudonymous "Norman Bean." Magazine is in similar condition to the October, 1912 issue. From the Edgar Rice Burroughs Collection of Roy and Dela White.
