    Description

Edgar Rice Burroughs. Tarzan of the Apes. Chicago: A. C. McClurg & Co., 1914. First edition, first printing, with "W. F. Hall Printing Co. / Chicago" in Old English type in two lines on the copyright page and without acorn device on the spine panel, as called for. Octavo. [10], 400, [1], [4, blank] pages; first two and last two leaves blank. Publisher's dark red cloth stamped in gilt and blind, spine lettered in gilt with "A.C. McClurg / & Co." at foot of spine; original illustrated dust jacket by Fred J. Arting. Corners just rubbed, head and foot of spine just pushed, gilt on spine somewhat darkened. Cream endpapers; penciled bookseller's notations to the front free endpaper recto. Internally generally clean and tight, all edges trimmed; minor intermittent thumbsoiling but chiefly to margins, approximately 10 x 10 mm professional restoration to the half-title leaf, text block edges with minor wear and soiling. Dust jacket with $1.30 price listed on the spine; professional restoration to the spine folds, corners, and head of spine, approximately 30 mm patch in at foot of spine with facsimile price and imprint, some re-coloring. Near fine book with very good dust jacket.

A stunning copy of Burroughs' "greatest and most enduring literary creation," so well received even before publication that the editor of The All-Story elected to publish the tale in its entirety (rather than serially) in the October 1912 issue. This edition marks the first in book form and the first of Burroughs' many novels to be published in hardcover, with Burroughs' extensive edits and corrections from the magazine edition. The first edition was composed of approximately 10,000 copies, with 5,000 copies in the first printing.

Currey, page 93, binding A, printing A; Zeuschner (1996), 696; Zeuschner (2016), pages 424-425. From the Gary Munson Collection

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
