Tarzan of the Apes, Inscribed by Burroughs to His Brother- and Sister-in-Law, and with a Signed Printed Illustration by Studley Burroughs

Edgar Rice Burroughs. Tarzan of the Apes. Chicago: A. C. McClurg & Co., 1914. First edition, first issue (with no "acorn" device on the spine, and with the W. F. Hall imprint in Old English on the copyright page). Inscribed by Burroughs, "To Henry Studley Burroughs / and his good wife, Ella / Frances Odhams, from / their low-brow brother, with / a bunch of love / Edgar Rice Burroughs" on the front free endpaper (which is loose). With a printed (silver gelatin?) image of Tarzan and a group (or, a "shrewdness") of apes mourning the death of an ape, signed by Burroughs' nephew (and frequent illustrator) Studley Oldham Burroughs ("S O Burroughs") affixed to the blank page facing page 1. Also with the bookplate of Ella Oldham Burroughs (Edgar Rice Burroughs' sister-in-law and Studley's mother) on the front pastedown. Octavo. [401], [1, blank] pages. Publisher's full burgundy cloth, front board ruled in blind, front board and spine lettered in gilt. Binding heavily soiled, worn and torn, joints split, several blank leaves (and a few printed leaves) loose. Quite shaken. Poor condition. Still, an excellent association, with all printed pages present. Zeuschner 696. From a private collection in North Carolina.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
