Edgar Rice Burrough. Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle. Chicago: A.C. McClurg, 1928. First edition in book form, first printing, with typographical error on page 208 where the bottom line has been transposed with the third line from the bottom. Signed with a lengthy inscription by the author to his first wife, Emma Hulbert Burroughs, signed "Ed" and dated October 2, 1928. Octavo. 377 pages. Illustrated with title page decoration and five sepia plates, including frontispiece, by J. Allen St. John and one map by the author. Publisher's green cloth, boards and spine stamped in black; original dust jacket illustrated by J. Allen St. John. Corners just rubbed, spine lightly sunned, head and foot of spine pushed. Cream endpapers; small penciled bookseller notations to the pastedowns. Internally clean and tight, all edges trimmed; text block edges toned with minor wear. Dust jacket with $2.00 price listed on the spine; minor edgewear, lightly creased along folds, small creased tear to the rear flap. Near fine book with near fine dust jacket.

A bright and beautiful copy of this Tarzan adventure, featuring the author's affectionate inscription to his first wife Emma, who is noted by Zeuschner as having also received the very first hardcover copy off the press of Burroughs' earlier novel, Tarzan of the Apes. Though Lord of the Jungle has not been directly adapted to film, it is a part of the Tarzan legacy, one of the best-known literary characters the world over and whose adventures are still adapted to film, television, comics, and radio to this day.

    Zeuschner (2016), page 412.
