    Description

    Edgar Degas. Autograph Letter Signed.
"Degas." Two pages (of a bifolium) in French, 4" x 6.25", [Paris?], Saturday, [June 24, 1876]. This letter is addressed to Deschamps, but it is not clear if it is written to Louis Deschamps (1842-1902), the French painter or the London art gallery manager and art dealer Charles William Deschamps (1848-1908). It is probably the latter due to Degas's reference in another letter to Deschamps's London home. Degas writes [English translation], "Money, money! My dear Deschamps, I returned last night. You must have received my letter from Naples. If I were [illegible] in London [illegible]. I am writing to you in haste. My cotton! [?]. That Sisley, do all you can! I must begin the execution phase in these damned affairs. Regards to your wife....In the midst of all my worries, and despite yours, u I am counting on you /u . When will I be left in peace? Give me a reply as soon as possible. Send me as much as you can."

Edgar Degas (1834-1917) was a French artist famous for his paintings, sculptures, prints, and drawings. He is especially identified with the subject of dance; more than half of his works depict dancers. Regarded as one of the founders of Impressionism, he rejected the term, preferring to be called a realist.

Charles Deschamps was the nephew and assistant of the art dealer Ernest Gambart. Deschamps moved to London at the siege of Paris in 1870, became Secretary of the Society of French Artists.

Condition: Letter has the usual folds, otherwise very good.
