Edgar Allan Poe. The Purloined Letter. Philadelphia: Carey and Hart, 1845 [actually 1844]. The first appearance of one of Poe's best detective stories. This story as it appears in the volume, The Gift 1845. Octavo. 300 pages. With frontispiece, engraved title-page, and several engravings inserted throughout. Publisher's full burgundy calf, boards and spine elaborately tooled in gilt. All edges gilt. Some toning, soiling, wear to binding. Endleaves toned and foxed. Some occasional foxing in text. A few gutters overopened. Still, a near fine example of this book. The Purloined Letter appears on pages 41-61.

This story features the first modern detective, C. Auguste Dupin. This story, and the other Dupin stories, are the basis of nearly all mystery fiction. Dupin was the prototype of "the character of the amateur detective who triumphs over the blundering police" (Grolier, American, 55n). This is the third and final of Poe's landmark detective stories.
