    Description

Poe's First Prose Collection, Complete and in the Original Cloth

Edgar Allan Poe. Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque. Philadelphia: Lea and Blanchard, 1840. First edition, one of 750 printed, with the following points: volume II, page 213 correctly numbered; "i" and hyphen on page 219 of volume II are below the line; four pages of critical notices serving as advertisements bound in before the title page in Volume II. Two twelvemo volumes. [ii, blank], [1]-243, [2, blank] pages; [ii, blank], i-iv (advertisements), [1]-228, [2, blank] pages. Publisher's purple muslin with printed paper spine labels. Moderate wear and soiling to the cloth. Spines and top edges sunned. Spine labels worn, with about half of the label for volume I remaining, and much less of volume II surviving. Corners bumped. Uneven foxing throughout. Penciled signature to title page and first page of text in each volume. Inked signature to each title page. All of these signatures bear the last name Griswold (Rufus Griswold's family?). Overall, a very good, complete copy, quite rare in the original cloth and with the original critical notices and flyleaves present.

"These volumes mark the culmination of Poe's effort, beginning as early as 1834 to get his prose tales into volume form. It is a milestone in his career as a prose writer, but was a failure commercially" (Heartman & Canny, A Bibliography of First Printings of the Writings of Edgar Allan Poe, page 53).

    BAL 16133. Heartman & Canny, pp. 49-54.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
