Newspaper: The Free American, Vol. 1, No. 83./El Americano Libre, Vol. 2, Num. 83; February 27, 1848. Vera Cruz: February 27, 1848. Newspaper. 4pp. Faint dampstaining. The date "Oct. 2, 1905" is neatly rubberstamped above masthead. In very good condition.

A regularly published Mexican newspaper with news printed in both English and in Spanish. The Free American seems to have catered to an Anglo readership and is printed solely in English; El Americano Libre is printed only in Spanish. The two papers -- which are published together -- feature different stories. Topics include general news from throughout Mexico, classifieds, some rather gory crime stories, theater notices, and even poetry. One story of Texas interest recounts an attack by a large group of armed Mexicans on an Anglo patrol which grew to such proportions that it brought out the Texas Rangers who were quartered in the vicinity. No Americans were injured, but nine Mexicans were killed and forty or fifty prisoners were taken. A colorful look at daily life in Mexico at the tail-end of the Mexican War, from the perspective of the American emigrant. From the Taking of Texas Collection.
