Miguel Barragan. El gobierno hará que tenga efecto el decreto de 2 de Diciembre del año anterior, dado por el General Presidente para restablecer el órden público en el Estado de Coahuila y Tejas. Mexico City: Departamento del Interior, May 23, 1835. 4to, 4pp., printing on only one side, 8.25" x 9.25". With rubric of Gutierrez Estrada. Fine condition.Miguel Barragan was interim president (1835-36), replacing Santa Anna under interesting circumstances. This was Santa Anna's first term as president, during which he revoked the liberal constitution of 1824 and ruled as a virtual dictator. Texas and a half dozen other provinces then declared themselves independent of the federal government until the return to constitutional principals; this was early in 1835. Santa Anna immediately relinquished the office temporarily - to Barragan - and headed north as "General Presidente" to Zacatecas to confront rebels there, whom he defeated on May 12, 1835, ransacking the city for forty-eight hours and plundering the great silver mines. Then he marched north to pacify Texas. After a handful of battles, including the Alamo, which made him infamous for his ruthlessness, Santa Anna came up against Sam Houston at the battle of San Jacinto (April 21, 1836) and lost. Fleeing, he was captured and compelled to grant independence from Mexico in order to save his life. Once free, Santa Anna repudiated the agreement, and the government of Mexico did not accept the "treaty", continuing to think of Texas as theirs until the Mexican American War a decade later.
Gutierrez Estrada, the Secretary of State, appears in Fanny Calderon de la Barca's Life in Mexico. Not found in OCLC nor at auction - scarce.
