Based on an ancient and more correct manuscript of Mauroceno, an improvement by Aldus of a 1493 edition.

Lucan (A.D.39-65), a native of Corduba and the nephew of Seneca, was a poet, quaestor and augur during the reign of Nero, but upon discovery of his role in the Pisan conspiracy, he was compelled to commit suicide.  Little more than the Bellum Civile, an epic in ten books of which the last book is incomplete, survives today, but it itself has been of immense influence upon Shelley and Macaulay, and upon seventeenth century drama.  It begins with the causes of war between Caesar and Pompey and ends with Caesar's occupation of Pharos (Egypt), and is given to many rhetorical digressions and much emotional display.
