    Charlemagne Woodcut
    Nuremberg, Germany.
    Ca. 1493.
    9" x 13" leaf, 16-3/4" x 21-3/8" frame.
Single printed page from the "Nuremberg Chronicle," from the "Die Schedelsche Weltchronik," by Hartmann Schedel (1440-1514), known in English as the "Nuremberg Chronicle." It was published in Nuremberg, Germany, in 1493 by Anton Koberger (1440/45-1513), first in Latin, then in German; this page is from the German edition. It shows a scene of battle from the life of the Emperor Charlemagne as seen by the title "Keyser Karel" in the upper margin. The woodcut was hand-colored after printing with light green, red, and blue pigment. The Nuremberg Chronicle is an illustrated world history, and one of the most famous illustrated incunables (book printed before the year 1500) from Germany. Two-column text, Gothic type, printed in black ink on paper, rubric in red ink. Paper is discolored in places, but otherwise in excellent condition. Custom framed.
