    Description

    A. G. Clopton. An Eulogy, on the Life and Character of Dr. Ashbel Smith (Four Copies). Jefferson, Texas: Iron News Print, 1886. First edition. 12mo. 15pp. Three of the printed wraps are of a different color (yellow, light green [2] and ecru). Slight dampstaining and margin nicks to some copies. Minor insect damage to one copy. All in very good condition.

The eulogy was delivered for Dr. Ashbel Smith, the pioneer doctor and diplomat who is known as the father of the University of Texas and about whom John H. Jenkins referred to as "one of the wisest men of early Texas." Dr. Smith was an important participant in the development of Texas. Under President Sam Houston, he was Surgeon General of the Army of the Republic of Texas and Charge d'Affairs to England and France. He was also a founder of the University of Texas and the first president of its Board of Regents. Upon his passing, A. G. Clopton, Dr. Smith's friend and colleague, wrote and delivered this eulogy, and, likely, had it printed in a small number for private distribution. Albert Gallatin Clopton was a doctor who served for a short time in the Texas Rangers, was a member of the Secession Convention in 1861, and later served as a captain in Hood's Texas Brigade. In 1874 he was elected president of the Texas State Medical Association.
