    Lord Shelburne's Copy, in Exquisite Eighteenth-Century Bindings

    [Plutarch]. La Prima [-Secunda] Parte della Vite di Plutarco. Tradotta da M. Lodovico Domenichi.... Venice: Gabriel Giolito de Ferrari, 1560. Two quarto volumes. [vii], 973; [vii], 535, 350. Woodcut titles and capitals. Beautifully bound in eighteenth-century full polished green morocco over boards. Broad gilt ornamental borders. Raised bands. Compartments decorated with gilt designs and lettering, as well as a later red morocco monogram of Lord Shelburne. Lavishly gauffered gilt edges, with red scalloped borders. Marbled endpapers. Bookplates to the front pastedowns of Henrietta Louisa Fermor, Countess of Pomfret (? - 1761). Bookplates to the rear pastedowns of William Petty, first Marquess of Landsdowne, and second Earl of Shelburne (1737-1805). Lord Shelburne presided as the Prime Minister of Great Britain from 1782 to 1783. Some minor rubbing to the extremities, and slight darkening to the spines. In chemises and a single half-morocco slipcase. A handsome set in near fine condition.
