[John Ford. The Broken Heart. A Tragedy. Acted By the King's Maiesties Servants at the private House in the Black-Friers. London: Printed by J[ohn] B[eale] for Hugh Beeston, and are to be sold at his Shop, neere the Castle in Corne-hill, 1633]. First edition. Dedication signed: John Ford. Small quarto (6.75 x 4.875 inches; 171 x 123 mm). [76] (of [80]) pages. Signatures: A4 (-A1, 2) B-K4 (A3 misprinted as A2). The first leaf is blank. Lacking the title leaf, but the text of the title-page neatly supplied in manuscript in black ink on a preliminary blank. A3 printed out of kilter, with resultant loss of some text to the outer margin. Appears to be missing either the colophon or possibly a second dedication leaf before the main text. The play itself though is textually complete. Stationers' Register: Entered 28 March [1633]. Decorative woodcut and typographic head-pieces; decorative woodcut initials.

Bound in nineteenth-century purple vertically ribbed cloth. Label on front cover: "Warrington Museum and Library, L." Binding worn; cloth faded around the edges. Final leaves frayed around the edges.

ESTC S102460; Greg 480 (II, pp. 627-628); STC (2nd ed.) 11156; Wise, Ashley Library, II, pp. 127-128. Property from the Estate of Robert (Bobby) Palazzo, Westlake Village, CA.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
