    A Beautiful Historiated Initial Featuring St. Andrew

    [Illuminated Manuscript]. Large Initial Featuring St. Andrew. [Rhineland: n.d., ca. 1480].

    Illuminated manuscript on vellum being a historiated initial "U" cut from a large choirbook. Approximately 6.75 x 7.25 inches. Parts of three lines of text and musical notations on the verso.

    St. Andrew is depicted, wearing red and green robes, holding his (X-shaped) cross in front of a forest scene. The "U" is done in shades of blue and white detail in a foliage motif, and the edges are surrounded by gold, the whole enclosed in a frame of green and red. Some fading to St. Andrew's robes. A handsome manuscript (framed and glazed).
