First edition, signed by the author on the facsimile page of the D-Day order of the day; additionally inscribed by Eisenhower on the front free-endpaper to his Naval Aide: "To Captain P. Aurand / with all the best / from his friend / Dwight D. Eisenhower." Large octavo (9.5 x 6.25 inches; 239 x 160 mm.). [4], xiv, [2], 559, [1, blank] pages; sixteen plates (after photographs by Edward Steichen), six double-page color maps (including endleaves), double-page color chart of "The Allied Air-Ground Team for the Final Offensive" inserted throughout. Thirty-eight maps in the text. Special presentation binding of blue levant morocco, pictorially stamped in gilt and silver on the front board in a flaming sword motif, spine ruled and lettered in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, gilt turn-ins. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. In the original blue morocco-tipped cloth slipcase. Spine is sunned to green; hinges starting (yet still quite solid). Slipcase lightly worn with some sunning. Still, a near fine copy. Captain Evan Peter Aurand (later Vice Admiral) became Eisenhower's Naval Aide after distinguished service in World War II. From the James C. Seacrest Collection.
