    Description

Inscribed by Dr. Seuss to the Son of a Personal Friend, with an Original Drawing

Dr. Seuss. McElligot's Pool. New York: Random House, [1947]. First edition, first printing, first state dust jacket. Presentation copy to Woodward "Woody" Dike, the son of California painter (and teacher and animator for the Walt Disney Studios) Phil Dike (1906-1990), who was a close personal friend of the author's. The inscription is on the verso of the front free endpaper in black ink, beneath an original drawing of a fish by Seuss: "Extra/Fish/for/Woody/From/Dr. Seuss". Quarto. [56] pages. Publisher's binding of full kelly-green cloth, with front board and spine stamped in dark green (the fish on the front board has an open mouth, and there is a seven-line copyright notice - Younger & Hirsch's state "A"), first state dust jacket, with price of "250/250" on the front flap only. Jacket has been repaired and restored, especially at spine and joints, minor rubbing, thumbsoiling to jacket, binding sunned at spine and edges of board, some rubbing and very minor soiling to binding, hinges just barely starting. A few text leaves lightly creased, with a few short tears. Slightly skewed. However, this copy lacks the typical childish markings found so often in rare children's books, and is quite bright internally. Overall, a near fine copy with a superb drawing and association, originally part of a collection of items sold by Woodward Dike at auction.
    Younger and Hirsch, 53.
