First edition, advance issue with the publication date (Mar. 22, 1924) rubber stamped on the front flyleaf; association copy, inscribed by the author for Otto Penzler on the half-title page: "Someday I'll tell / you the weird happening / concerning the twins. / Best / Dorothy / B Hughes," additionally initialed by the author on the title-page. Octavo (7.25 x 5 inches; 185 x 127 mm.). 240 pages. Publisher's perfect binding, in the original wrappers (an example of the dust jacket, trimmed slightly shorted); all edges of the text block trimmed; plain endpapers and flyleaves. Spine just slightly leaning with very light creasing between the gatherings; backstrip very faintly faded; edges lightly worn with short closed tears at the joints fold edges; shallow ripple to the bottom of the rear panel and light discoloration, presumably from a small paperclip, at the upper edge; corners a lightly worn. Two small, dark blemishes to the page edges. An attractive, very good copy of a fragile issue. The author's debut novel. Otto Penzler published new editions of several of Hughes's titles, including a reissue of The So Blue Marble, for which he wrote the introduction.
