First edition; association copy, inscribed by the author for Otto Penzler on the front free endpaper: "This book was one that even / scared me a bit. It will always / be a special favorite as through / it I met Humphrey Bogart / who made such a perfect Dix. / always affectionately / Dorothy / B Hughes," additionally initialed by the author on the title-page. Octavo (7.4375 x 5.125 inches; 189 x 130 mm.). [vi], 217, [1, blank] pages. Publisher's brown quarter-cloth over black paper-covered boards, spine lettered and stamped in black; top edge of the text block trimmed, others untrimmed; plain endpapers; in the original dust jacket, priced $2.50. Boards very slightly splayed; spine ends bumped with a couple ripples to the interior of the backstrip; spine ends and corners lightly worn. Top edge of the text block very lightly dust-soiled; endpapers faintly tanned. Dust jacket edges worn, with chipping to the crown and fold edges; folds somewhat rubbed with a minuscule hole and tiny closed tear along the front panel fold; spine panel faintly dulled with a couple small interior bruises; foxed, mostly visible on the verso and the white background on the rear panel and flaps. Still, a very good copy. Source for the 1950 film of the same name directed by Nicholas Ray and starring Humphrey Bogart and Gloria Graham. The Dark Page II 100.
