Volume I of Roberts' Holy Land

David Roberts. The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt & Nubia. From drawings made on the spot by David Roberts, R.A. With historical descriptions, by the Revd. George Croly, L.L.D. Lithographed by Louis Haghe. Vol. I. London: F. G. Moon, 1842. Large folio (24.125 x 17.125 inches). Volume I only. Unpaginated. Portrait frontispiece. Forty-three tinted lithographed plates (twenty-two full-page, twenty-one half-page), including title vignette. Half bound in nineteenth-century maroon leather over marbled paper boards. Elaborate gilt spine, gilt rules, all edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Leather and boards rubbed and scuffed with some surface loss to paper. Both hinges damaged; front hinge cracked at preliminary blanks. Some pages with water stains to lower margin; larger water stain to lower margin of approximately last ten leaves, with only one barely touching border of Plate 39 ("Jacob's Well"). Significant foxing throughout, affecting text and image areas of many plates. A few short tears to margins throughout, a few corners missing at front. Plate 21 ("Jerusalem from the North") with several gouges in image area. Good or better.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
