The First Quarto Edition of Hume's Essays and Treatises

David Hume. Essays and Treatises on Several Subjects. London: Printed for A. Millar ... and A. Kincaid and A. Donaldson, at Edinburgh, 1758.

New Edition (the first quarto edition). Quarto (10.5 x 8 inches). viii, 539, [1, errata] pages. Index.

Contemporary calf, sympathetically rebacked retaining original spine, covers ruled in gilt, spine elaborately tooled in gilt in compartments, burgundy gilt calf lettering label, five raised bands, later endpapers, preserving contemporary bookplate. Moderate wear to covers, preserved spine slightly chipped, pages 186, 202 and 296 have sizeable chips on the lower corner, not affecting text, page 237 has a large tear on the lower third of the page, page 311 has a short marginal tear. Still, very good.

This "New Edition" of Hume's Essays and Treatises on Several Subjects from 1758 saw the renaming of several of Hume's seminal treatises. "Some Alterations are made on the Titles of the Treatises, contained in the following Volume. What in former Editions was called Essays moral and political, is here entitled Essays, moral, political, and literary, Part I. The political Discourses form the second Part. What in former Editions was called, Philosophical Essays concerning human Understanding, is here entitled An Enquiry concerning human Understanding. The four Dissertations lately published are dispersed thro' different Parts of this volume" (from the "Advertisement").

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
