    Description

David Goodis. Dark Passage. New York: Julian Messner, Inc., [1946]. First edition in book form. Presentation copy, signed and inscribed by the author to Leo Guild to the front free endpaper recto, "January 26, 1948 / To - / Leo Guild - who is the inspiration / for the hero of this / novel / - David Goodis." Octavo. 248 pages. Publisher's black cloth, spine lettered in gilt; original illustrated dust jacket. Corners rubbed, head and foot of spine pushed and somewhat worn, gilt on spine worn. Cream endpapers; penciled bookseller's notations, some effaced, to the front free endpaper recto. Internally clean and tight, all edges trimmed, top edge stained orange; text block edges toned with minor wear. Dust jacket unclipped ($2.00); minor edgewear, chipping to head and foot of spine with some losses, spine a bit sunned, rubbed and somewhat soiled, pencil mark to front flap. Housed in custom red cloth clamshell case, black leather spine label stamped in gilt. Near fine book with very good dust jacket.

A beautiful copy featuring a truly enviable inscription, one of only a handful known from this author, to Leo Guild, writer, editor, and producer. First serialized in The Saturday Evening Post before it was published in book form the same year, the story was of immediate interest and Warner Bros. paid a reported $25,000 to Goodis for the film rights. The film starred the real-life couple Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall and commanded a budget of $1.6 million (particularly impressive for 1947). An incredibly faithful adaptation, the movie made full use of Bogart's classic noir look, a man made for trench coats and fedoras and brooding in mirrors, and Bacall's sultry femme fatale energy and talented, subtle acting, and ultimately grossed over $3.4 million at the box office.
