Dashiell Hammett. The Thin Man. London: Arthur Barker, 1934. First English edition (third overall). Octavo (7.375 x 4.75 inches; 187 x 122 mm.). 284, [2] pages. Publisher's orange cloth, front and spine stamped in black; all edges of the text block trimmed; in the original illustrated dust jacket. Spine slightly skewed; a bit of shelf wear at extremities of binding; corners gently bumped; spine ends gently pushed. Top edge of text block dust-soiled; normal toning to remaining edges with a bit of soiling toward bottom of fore-edge. Tiny split starting at hinge between title and half-title. Jacket browned recto and verso and slightly rubbed at exposed panels; splitting along joint folds with a two and five-eighths inches split at middle of rear joint; a bit of chipping to spine and flap fold ends; tape repairs at bottom of spine panel with small stains from tape residue upper and lower edges of jacket. Very good. Uncommon in jacket. Hammett's final novel, which went on to inspire a series of six films in the early 1930s through the 1940s. Layman A 6.3. From the Otto Penzler Collection of Mystery Fiction.
