Spine with just a hint of a lean; backstrip very faintly dulled, with some light discoloration at the spine ends; bottom edge of the spine with a single minor crimp; bottom corners very slightly bent; some trace light soiling to the board edges. Top stain still very vivid but with a few tiny scuffs; small area of tanning near the bound edge of the bottom of the text block, not visible in the page margins; single faint smudge of thumb-soiling on the preliminary blank. Dust jacket spine panel a little faded; spine ends worn with some light chipping at the base, removing the K and half of the N in Knopf and shaving a couple of other letters;a few other minor chips to fold edges; short closed tear (about five-eighths of one inch) to the top of the front panel, a couple of other shorter closed tears along the bottom edge; folds lightly worn with a tiny bruise near the top of the front panel fold and a couple of short interior closed tears to both panel folds; some scanty soiling to the rear panel; a few negligible surface scuffs to the front panel; verso with some faint offsetting from the stamping on the book's covers. A nearly fine copy in an about near fine jacket. A tough title to find in a nice jacket, especially so unrestored. Housed in a custom clamshell case by the Dragonfly Bindery. Hammett's second book and the final Continental Op novel. Originally published in four parts in Black Mask from November 1928 to February 1929. Layman A2.1.a. We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
